Telling the Old Story

Joining with David Warlick, Ewan, Miguel, Wes, and Darren, I’m looking to create and tell the new story. The new story about how learning happens, how technology changes the nature of teaching and learning. I’m looking and I have a few potential stories but too often I’m finding old stories.

Our provincial teachers association publishes a monthly newspaper and this month’s edition featured an article about teachers and technology. Here’s an excerpt:

…developed a representing activity for the grade six unit, Taking Flight. In this activity, students focused on the objectives of considering audience, purpose and situation, and using print and other media to explore ideas and express understanding, as they developed a poster to advertise for astronauts. Zakaluzny explained that when her students had done similar activities in the past, many of them became frustrated if they made a mistake because trying to correct mistakes usually means beginning the activity again.When using technology, however, it is easy to alter the size of words, move graphics around, or insert more content without having to start over. Moving Day

Well, I’ve finally made the switch to my own space. Let me show you around:

First, you’ll notice my new address. I purchased the domain, ideasandthoughts.org.
Then I set up my site on my reseller account through webserve.ca. Then thanks to Rob Wall, installed WordPress 2.0. [WordPress 2.0] has an absolutely wonderful import tool which brought all my previous work from blogger over in literally one click….beautiful.

I spent a few hours installing themes until I found one that I could customize to my liking. I choose the blue horizon theme. One of the things I wanted to incorporate was the rotating banner that Darcy Norman so elegantly uses. I had installed it on a previous install I did for a client but wanted to include my own photos. So everytime you come you’ll see a different header. All photos are taken by me and I include the details on the bottom left corner. I’m not much of a photographer but love taking photos and playing around with them.

I also wanted a theme that utilizes the page feature. At present, I only have the About page but will add more.

Martha is Podcasting


Martha asked me about recording her voice for her blog. So now she’s a podcaster! I showed her Audacity and a few basic controls and she recorded her first podcast. We placed some music as a background track, uploaded the file to ourmedia, installed a little player and voila! I submitted her podcast to itunes so soon it will be subscribeable.

The content likely won’t shake your world too much but it’s her space and she’s quite pleased.
