Well if this does not hit the nail on the head. Extreme sports interest today’s youth. Creativity and excellence are all part of this new sport. Players and youth will try and try again to do a move, perfect a trick because they want to. Youth attracted to these sports are not your typical athlete. The fringe elements also join in and often are better at it. Blogging can attract the fringe elements too.

The ability to have less groaning about writing and more risk taking makes blogging worth while to todays youth. Why then do so many of our colleagues not bite into letting their students blog? Perhaps they need to attempt an extreme sport of two.

    Skydiving anyone?

What an interesting concept. I suppose student blogging is a lot like extreme sports. I agree with Chris in his assessment above. I would say that student blogging, like extreme sports, has an element of risk in it as well. Some students will stumble and fall. They need a good mentor or trainer to help them get back on track. Others find it just comes naturally, like they were born to do this. There is definitely a thrill that hits you in the gut when you know you have really “nailed it” in a blog as well. Great analogy!

I think that blogging could be considered the equivalent of extreme sports in writing. Blogging is not very structured, it allows people to experiment and be creative. It also allows them to be themselves and stretch their limits. Blogging is becoming more popular, two of my professors are expecting us to have a blog and it is amazing how many different kinds of blogs are out there. Blogging could be a very good tool for teachers to have students use in the classroom. It makes writing more interesting for teh students. The risk of having your blog on the internet with the chance that anyone could comment (good or bad) just adds an element of excitment. I think that the analogy of blogging being the extreme game of writing is correct.

Looked interesting so I went chasing the original article. (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200811/andrew-sullivan-why-i-blog)

I’m tempted to add the picture to the collection of resources and background info on blogging I give my new learners when we start!

I’m new to the blogging game but I find this is a great way to describe it.

Usually with an extreme sport someone introduces it to you and shows you the basics. After that, it’s all up to you. You have to spend time yourself figuring out how it works. And the best part is; you need to find out what works for you. You can push yourself however you’d like. And after a while you start to establish a style of your own.

I found all of these so far in my early blogging.

Hey everyone, thanks for chiming in. To be honest, I hadn’t really thought much of the metaphor but I am a big fan of using metaphors to understand change. Whether blogging is like this or not, I think continuing to find ways to describe new concepts is an important exercise. Keep the great ideas coming, I love it!

Hmm, I didn’t get the analogy at first because IMO blogging is relatively “safe”. I get what you are saying now though.

That’s an interesting comparison and I think it’s true to some extent. Extreme sports take a while to get the hang of, but when you do it’s very rewarding. Kind of like blogging. Nice metaphor.
