I hate that, when an ISP slaps all its crap on your PC and you cant escape their logo haha. Me and my family love google, have it set as the start page when we open up explorer. I think hanks to the internet the average intelligence of our kids for a given age has risen considerably especially regarding general knowledge, you dont know somthing? type it in and itll tell you in a few seconds

Personally I prefer the AOL interface when you subscribe to them. Even though they totally assimilate your pc with their AOLness non of my family have problems using it, and we certainly aren’t very computer literate hehe. I find myself using Google a lot at work though and I’ve seen them using it in my kids school.

Google is pretty good at filtering out all the rubbish these days so I wouldn’t worry to much about safety. That coupled with a descent internet security package like Panda your kids are bound to be safe, if i was you id stick the word “chat” in the ban list and all the other danger words.

Don’t forget to make use of the filter settings in Google itself.

It is true that it is an invaluable tool, but we must not become totally dependent on it or trust it 100%. Remember Google is just a mail boy who’s content is mainly controlled by other individuals. It has become a part of our daily lives, I find it hard to imagine a life without things like Google and i think my kids certainly couldn’t. I think the educational support it provides is invaluable and our children will be smarter because of it! Of course it must be moderated, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem thanks to netnanny.

I think this really does highlight how the Internet, and Google in particular has entered our daily lives. A lot of people I know will search for something on Google, and if the don’t find it will just believe it isn’t there rather than look on another search engine.

My 5 year old asked me a question the other day and I replied that I didn’t know the answer. She told me I better Google it and find out right away because Mom’s are supposed to know everything!

It is great that kids know how and almost by reflex use the tools to get the information they want!

This makes me think of spelling a word incorrectly and being told to “Look it up in the dictionary” with the standard response being “But I don’t know who to spell it”. Oh my how times have changed.

Don’t you just love the times when our children surprise us with connections. Children are such a joy.

My 12 year old came home from his first non athletic camp (game maker and toonimation) and ask me if I had heard of a program called Scratch. I responded with yes. I told him about Professor Mitch Resnick’s presentation at NECC. http://web.media.mit.edu/~mres/ He was excited to hear I had heard about it and asked if we could download and play with it.
