Street View gets scary

I love the Street View feature in Google maps. Currently there are over 20 cities in the US that offer this close up view of all streets.  If you’re not familiar with Street View, check out these screencasts for more detail.

I like the way this video combines Street View and humor. This is the kind of storytelling that works so well on the web. Short, funny and the remixing of familiar tools and themes.

The whole concept of Street View scares me a little. Well, a lot, actually. While Google Maps and Google Earth have some very practical uses, I’m not sure that I can say the same for Street View. Could this not be considered an invasion of privacy? I’m hoping that it never makes its way to Canada…

  • It’s on its way to Canada…The Google vehicle has already snapped all the streets in Montreal!

  • Kim,

I believe the company that does this is from Calgary. At any rate, I know there have been some concerns raised but again, when you’re in public, you certainly have to be prepared for this. What stops a newspaper photography from snapping a random picture of someone on the street? It’s been going on for years but certainly not as rabid as this makes it. It’s not stopping so we may as well get used to it.

Wow, I found this to be very fascinating, instead of scary. I can see the negative aspects of streetview, but I think it would also be very helpful. I love to travel, and sometimes directions can be YIKES when traveling in unknown towns and cities. Being able to pick out certain details ( like a church, or an interesting tree) could be reassuring that you are on the right street when traveling. Personally I think this type of technology could be helpful in the future.

  • Hehe very cool Video, theres no need to be scared of the google street view, i mean its just 20 cities and not every street is being shot.

  • This is definitely great for travelling purposes – I mean, actually, it’s brilliant. Really brilliant. While their may be privacy issues (but, not really, since anyone can legally take a snapshot of your street) the real problem I sometimes worry about is national security. Is it right that just anyone at any part of the world can now get significant details about areas in your country? I wonder how that really helps national security, to be honest.

I have no sympathy for people who overuse the “If you’re in public anyone can see you anyway”. That may be true for the odd twenty people passing by, but what about when the entire world has access to it? Then it becomes another issue entirely. If this reaches Australia I will be very upset, people can be stapped walking out of brothels, alcoholics anonymous meetings and what about fertility clinics?
What makes us trust google so much? Imagine if the Government had done this, then there would be an uproar. I think we need to re-think our priorities and who we trust most.

  • Thanks for the theme. I will just still have to get a different header image.

  • have good information on a good site would be useful to people thank you

  • This Google Street View is no longer “just in the movies” but a real thing which makes it scary. It is a very useful tool especially for traveling but other than that, it’s creepy. Great post! Cool video.
