Anyone who has ever sent an email to your Gmail account using a gmail account is automatically added to your friends list in Reader. Interesting that some people have complained that they want the option to add people that Google Reader but not gmail accounts. I think that Google will keep it this way to ensure that more people sign up for Gmail.
