I guess we have to distinguish a bit between networks and communities. With communitiies, you often don't get to choose all the members, i.e. school. With networks you select who you want to learn from. Both require elements of socialization and certainly networks and communities often overlap.

Creating dynamic community of learners will likely bring in online resources and relationships. I'm not sure there is a formula. For me, it would be modeling what my community and network looks like, how I interact with them and how I contribute.

Clarence Fisher would be one that does this a great deal. His students create personal learning networks as well as belong to communities with other classrooms. THey use tools like IM or whatever to connect and is bringing in some nice results from what I can see.

I've used learning groups in my class for as long as I can remember - http://www.adhdkids.info/groups.html -- I wonder, though, about bringing more "faces" into the mix with online social learning. I want to create a dynamic community of learners within my classroom -- if I bring in others, I would want to find a way of integrating them into the community I have established, not have them drawing my students out of our community. I'd love to hear ideas on how to do this.
