Advice for Web 2.0 newbies
Posted by: Dean Shareski in Blogs, Classrooms, Miscellaneous, new storiesOn Monday, July 24th I’ll be giving a workshop entitled, “The Joys of Social Software”. I’ll be working with a small group of teachers introducing them to many of the great tools and applications to design a Read/Write classroom.
Having done a number of these types of workshops, I realize I’m simply creating an awareness….exploration, application, immersion, and implementation is something completely different. I need to keep this in mind as I’m often overly enthusiastic about the possibilities only to realize that for many, it’s just too much to wrap their heads around and in many ways are not really ready for all the awaits them.
Given the basic advice of taking one idea and developing it, what advice would you give them about transforming their classroom? How would you encourage them to use the tools to create a new type of classroom? What should they pay attention to? What should they be weary of?
I will try and provide an opportunity to bring in those who wish to speak live via Skype. I haven’t completely set my agenda but there will only be 5 participants so we can be fairly informal.
So add your thoughts and I’ll be sure to pass them along.

Extend the Classroom
Read / Write technology melts classroom walls. My suggestion is that teachers think about ways they can use social software to thread what happens in class into the rest of students’ lives.
So far, my favorite “tie ins” have stemmed from after hours text and voice chats with students. I also love it when students and I leave comments on each others’ blogs and Flickr pages.

Watch as the students connect and learn about each other and a real community of learners evolves. A quiet student I had last year said she was more comfortable giving speeches in front of the class after blogging and sharing her thoughts with others. Students will form connections with each other in a new way and these bonds can only come about through these tools.

Hi Dean
I would really be interested in participating in this in some way. We are in the process of developing a “scope and sequence” I am using this term loosely. I am trying to figure out a way of bringing Web 2.0 into this. Hearing a discussion on this would be great. You have indicated that you are going to have a Skype session open? Without sounding pushy, I can also provide you with an account on Breeze if you ever require an additional communication tools for sessions like this. Anyway if I can join the discussion in some capacity that would be great. If not I hope to connect sometimes else.
Thanks
Thad

Hi Dean,
I’m a huge fan of Web 2.0 and recently did a 2.0 day session on Web 2.0 topics which included social software - mostly del.icio.us so participants could save all of the links we visited, looking at several Web 2.0 applications, blogging, RSS, Wikis and finishing off with podcasting. It was loads of fun and very exciting for me to see the excitement in the group. My group was small as well with only 9 participants but this allowed one to one interaction over the 2.0 days.
I see Web 2.0 apps being very useable in the classroom. The sharing of ideas and resources is the key concept which is being modelled by many fellow bloggers already. I’d invite you to visit my wiki page at http://joevans.pbwiki.com/ and feel free to make use of it with your participants if it is in any way applicable to your needs.
Cheers
John
